Really enjoyed。 I'm so glad that the love interest acted better towards the main character in this one。 Really enjoyed。 I'm so glad that the love interest acted better towards the main character in this one。 。。。more

The first story arc of this series is complete in two volumes, although it goes on from there。 The lead character, Filemina, wakes up from an illness when she is six years old with vague memories of an earlier life in modern-day Japan。 In her current world (the standard vaguely-medieval world of fantasy manga) she’s a nobleman’s daughter。 The story follows her romance with Edy, a wizard who is ostracized because of his black hair, which in this world means he has powerful magic; of course, being The first story arc of this series is complete in two volumes, although it goes on from there。 The lead character, Filemina, wakes up from an illness when she is six years old with vague memories of an earlier life in modern-day Japan。 In her current world (the standard vaguely-medieval world of fantasy manga) she’s a nobleman’s daughter。 The story follows her romance with Edy, a wizard who is ostracized because of his black hair, which in this world means he has powerful magic; of course, being from Japan, Filomena is not put off by black hair at all。 He goes off to wizard school, then to work for the royal court, and because he’s sullen and inarticulate, he never tells Filemina he loves her, but because this is a shoujo manga, she waits patiently for him to open up。 What’s odd about this book is that the main character is away from most of the action, although enough happens to keep it fairly interesting。 The art is done in a gorgeous, detailed shoujo fantasy style。 。。。more

Edy and Filimena have been engaged and spending significant time together, allegedly, since this book doesn’t handle concepts like the passage of time well, but Edy is forced to go on a quest to defeat the Dark Lord with a bunch of companions。 When the unthinkable happens, Filimena must come to terms with the state of things, and the audience must come to terms with the fact that it’s meant to care。I’m no writer, but I think if you want the audience to care about anything in your story, you shou Edy and Filimena have been engaged and spending significant time together, allegedly, since this book doesn’t handle concepts like the passage of time well, but Edy is forced to go on a quest to defeat the Dark Lord with a bunch of companions。 When the unthinkable happens, Filimena must come to terms with the state of things, and the audience must come to terms with the fact that it’s meant to care。I’m no writer, but I think if you want the audience to care about anything in your story, you should probably develop it。 The miserable, grouchy relationship between the sourpuss Edy and the incredibly patient Filimena barely has time to be anything except more freaking tea before this whole Dark Lord business starts up。Once the chosen hero and the other party members (I mean, Filimena knows what’s up at least) head off it’s basically nothing but Edy and these new characters, but I don’t care enough about the main pair yet to give a crap。 I know it’s symbolic, but that damn handkerchief cannot stand in for character development。Filimena’s utterly unwarranted jealousy from nothing over the princess (I’ll at least give them a nod for making the latter much different than the usual archetype she seems)。 The tragedy that bogs down the book and dares to maybe go somewhere interesting before it’s hand waved away (“I am better than every other person who had done this” is lousy writing)。 This is just a mess。Let me give you three immediately obvious ways this book could have been smarter。 One, Filimena is actually the titular wizard because of her very black hair in her previous life。 Two, Edy actually ends up in Japan。 Three, Filimena is the one who pulls the magic sword from its resting place and becomes the chosen hero。 Instead, mopey and mopey learn to copey is the order of the day。The art goes from wildly dynamic and detailed to wonky as hell again - one of the last panels of the princess makes it look like her chin is melting。 It ends with a big moment that should wreck the title of the book and doesn’t land whatsoever based on its previous actions。There’s so much glossing over things that should be far more prominent。 I utterly lost it when Filimena thinks to herself that she should be honest with Edy because she’s an older woman in a young body during the climactic scene。 The time for that was probably a couple vows ago!2。5 stars, rounded down because annoyed。 They might as well chop the ‘fiancée’ part of this off the title because this book couldn’t care less about it’s title character。 Everything is in service to this dour jerk。 I’m half tempted to try a third volume to see if this can get any better as I’m morbidly curious where the story might even go now, but it’s going to be a hard sell。 。。。more

This story grew on me the longer it went along。 I appreciated the idea that the main character wasn't involved in the heroic fantasy part of the story。 Only Filimina and Edy's reticence is keeping them apart, and there are no serious impediments or misunderstandings thrown their way。 Their supporting cast is fun and cute。 For some reason, though, it wasn't as impactful as it could have been。 It's light and comforting, and I can certainly enjoy a "cozy" now and then, so that isn't the problem。 It This story grew on me the longer it went along。 I appreciated the idea that the main character wasn't involved in the heroic fantasy part of the story。 Only Filimina and Edy's reticence is keeping them apart, and there are no serious impediments or misunderstandings thrown their way。 Their supporting cast is fun and cute。 For some reason, though, it wasn't as impactful as it could have been。 It's light and comforting, and I can certainly enjoy a "cozy" now and then, so that isn't the problem。 It's probably the low stakes, in combination with the world-building being generic (bog-standard medieval fantasy world with king, princess, magic school, council of wizards, JRPG elements, ho-hum), and the story being rather predictable。 I'm still not convinced this needed to be an isekai。 In fact, there are some things about its being in that genre that make this story uncomfortable。 For example, Edy has no idea he's marrying someone with a mind that's nearly 50 years old, because Filimena never brings it up, even when she's at her most open and honest with him。The story could quite easily end here, with。。。 well, you can see the cover for yourself。 The title of the series will be inaccurate, unless some other fiancée of another wizard is the main character in the next part! I'm not the one buying these, and if it were entirely up to me, I'd stop reading here。 But if another one makes its way into my hands with no effort or expense on my part, I'll probably be curious enough to read it。 。。。more

Me, crying over a book? Yes, yes I am。 This manga tore so desperately at my heart and soul。 The couple finally moves past school, and are finally finding time to spend together, only for him to be forced to go to war。 The past life scenario plays into this one a bit more than the last, and there's some heart breaking news that turns to joy。 Nonetheless to quote Brendon Urie, "What a Beautiful wedding。" Me, crying over a book?
